It is a must-have for secondary schools – in the library, with the careers lead and accessible for students to explore.

The engineers in this book demonstrate that no matter their background, skills and interests, there continues to be so much opportunity for them in this exciting profession. Alongside the inspiring words, colourful photographs of the engineers and technical illustrations draw the eye in.Having time to read this book and discover more about the engineers featured is sure to inspire young people and show them that a career in Engineering is within reach.

Dr Shini Somara is passionate about making science and technology accessible to all, through a variety of media platforms. Testament to my recommendation, after reading this book, I got four more copies to give to our Women’s Engineering Society summer work experience scheme students! In addition to the printed resources, a series of 15 case study videos have been produced, allowing readers to get a glimpse into the engineers’ everyday lives and learn how they’re making an impact through their work. In this book, Dr Shini Somara shares her own passion for engineering and interviews 46 engineers from around the world working in fields ranging from healthcare to entertainment to space exploration. She wants to see more equality, diversity and inclusion in STEM - something she did not experience herself whilst studying and working in engineering. Engineers Making a Difference: Inventors, Technicians, Scientists and Tech Entrepreneurs Changing the World, and How You Can Join Them (Hardback) Dr. To support you to deliver the activities in the Teacher’s Guide, we’ve provided some additional activity sheets. Shini Somara was awarded a Doctorate in Engineering in 2004 for her development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a digital simulation tool used by mechanical engineers to visualise how gases and liquids flow.

In this book you'll meet 46 engineers, from apprentices and lab technicians to university professors and start-up CEOs and hear what problems they are solving and why they love their jobs. Shini now broadcasts across all areas of science (including climate change, sustainability, health, food and energy) to popularises and democratise STEM. Doing things differently should be encouraged in manufacturing, which is why we need more young people to join the industry. We are proud to be a partner in this important project to ensure that we have more engineers to make a difference in our world. Dr Somara acknowledges that not everyone has an engineering family member or hero to aspire to, but hopes that people like Beth, along with the other 45 incredible and diverse individuals in the book may do just that by showing the real difference they are making in the world.Photos and graphics subject to third party copyright used with permission or © Imperial College London. This book is clearly a passion project for Shini Somara and I can imagine it helping lots of children to make the transition from having a vague desire to work in engineering to having a much more specific understanding of what engineers do and where they see their future selves. This graphic novel takes on controversial topics like climate change and fracking to separate the truth from the fiction in a fun but informative way. Also included are Imperial alumni, such as Pierre Paslier, co-founder of sustainability startup Notpla, Dr David Trevelyan, who can be found transforming audio at TikTok, and Dr Ugur Tanriverdi, whose unhindr startup is helping to change the lives of those who wear prosthetics. Somara has been running her own podcast, since June 2018, entitled ‘Innervation’ - The podcast provides a platform for women in STEM* to share their experiences and wisdom learned.
