Leinster and Ireland rugby legend Dr Bill Mulcahy was inducted into the Guinness Hall of Fame. Mulcahy, a former UCD, Bective Rangers and Skerries captain, played on two Lions tours in 1959 and the 1962 tour to South Africa. In doing so, he, along with teammate Niall Brophy became the first players from the UCD club to represent the Lions. A hugely popular administrator after retirement, he became Skerries’ first President of the Leinster Branch in season 1995/96, the inaugural year of the Heineken Cup.

The inquest heard that Hall had been wearing dark clothing with reflective panels, although the items were not dealt with in accordance with normal police procedures for retaining evidence so their reflective properties could not be tested. Having spent time with Mike and knowing that he understands our club mission and values I believe we have made the right decision. The ridiculous thing was we didn’t even know who was going to play right or left or in or out. It was madness. The competition also witnessed Jonah Lomu's emergence as a sporting superstar. For Wales, though, it was simply another failed campaign following yet another troubled build-up. What it did show us is some of the players we had in the so-called fringes weren’t good enough and Alec went about changing a few of those. It was also the first global rugby tournament the Springboks were allowed to compete in, with South Africa only readmitted to the international game in 1992.

We had Clive Rowlands manager, Ian McGeechan and Roger Uttley coaches, Kevin Murphy, the English physio, and Ben Goodfellow, the doctor. That was it.They were a brilliant side and, for me, they should have won that World Cup because they were the best team in the tournament.

I was in a maul and he just came driving in and caught me in the side of the head. I played the next week mind you. When we were able to force Sam out, we needed a new figurehead. Peter Ridsdale had been brought in by Sam as an advisor. We liked him, he worked incredibly hard.

Mike Griffiths (left, wearing No 1) during a dust-up in the match against New South Wales on the 1989 Lions tour of Australia. Fellow Welshmen Robert Norster and David Young are the other Lions involved in the altercation Then, when you came together as a collective, with the team spirit he created through those personal relationships, it became an excellent environment to be in. After the match, Stuart was getting into his the car and Alec said ‘You can’t drive like that, where are you going?’ But we won 11 out of 12 games. We were just half a game off Willie John’s invincibles from 1974 in South Africa, who drew a game. He thought completely differently about the game. He completely changed the culture of the club, from the bottom up.
