Last week, an article entitled, " Students 'angry and confused' over Archbishop Glenn Davies' comments on gender equality", was published by the ABC. The students who spoke to the ABC not only misrepresented the Archbishop's stance on the role of women in the church, but largely neglected even to engage with it, preferring instead to make sweeping generalisations about how his ideas were "outdated", that they contradicted messages "told to them by their parents, educators and society in general" and that he spoke of men as having "higher status and more power". (Interestingly, I have no memory of him saying anything of the kind). These are just some of the many examples of the demeaning views of women that persist in our world where Christian influence has not been widespread. 6. Problems in Our Post-Christian Society The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood was created at the same time. The goal of the council was to influence evangelicals to adopt the principles of complementarianism in their homes, churches, schools and other religious agencies. The problem is much deeper than simply one of translation, she said, and she challenged the idea that fidelity to the original documents is paramount. The theological issue is whether there is a suggestion of male leadership or headship in the family from the beginning of creation. The fact that God did not choose to call the human race “woman,” but “man,” probably has some significance for understanding God’s original plan for men and women. Of course, this question of the name we use to refer to the race is not the only factor in this discussion, but it is one factor, and our use of language in this regard does have some significance in the discussion of male-female roles today” (440)

Speaking truth without love is not effective or helpful ( 1 Corinthians 13:2; Ephesians 4:15). Our purpose in conversations with critics should be to display Christ’s love to others, not to fling words or prove ourselves. Love is what disarms and impacts people. Why Does This Matter? The Rev. The Southern Baptist Convention soon incorporated these beliefs into its confessional statement – a document of generally shared beliefs. In an amendment in 1998 to the “Baptist Faith and Message,” the convention included the complementarian language. If you were to ask some people the question above, the answer would be a resounding yes; others might answer with a resounding no. But it is a debate that has continued to be fueled as our society seeks out anything that could be considered sexist and anti-women.

Christopher Rollston is one of the world’s leading paleographers of ancient Near Eastern inscriptions. I have been harshly critical of some of his views, principally regarding unprovenanced inscriptions—inscriptions that have surfaced only from the antiquities market, not from a professional archaeological excavation. They may be forgeries, he argues. Although my criticism of Chris’s position is intense, 1 we remain good friends and regularly share a meal. Chris is also a master carpenter. Above my office door hangs a beautiful polished wooden plaque expertly carved with my name in paleo-Hebrew script—the kind of Hebrew letters used before the Babylonian destruction of the Solomonic (First) Temple in 586 B.C.E. Questions about the New Testament and women raise even larger questions about authority, inspiration, relationship, human nature, and gender broadly construed (not just the male/female binary). We can’t discuss these matters unless we know where and why we disagree about biblical interpretation. Christians who care about God’s love and justice cannot ignore these conversations. There’s simply too much at stake.

This text follows the often-quoted statement, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (3:28). Letha Scanzoni and Nancy Hardesty, All We’re Meant to Be: A Biblical Approach to Women’s Liberation (Waco, TX: Word Books, 1974), p. 56. Throughout the Bible there are numerous positive images of women. In the Old Testament women share the image of God at creation. At the second coming of Jesus, the Church is represented as the bride of Christ. From beginning to end, the Bible includes the feminine as an integral part of the Judaeo-Christian tradition. While it is true that the Bible is written over a long period of time into specific cultures, and that some of these contexts did not give equal social advantages to women, it would not be true to say that the message of the Bible is sexist or discriminatory against women. For 2000 years, Jesus' revolutionary example has propelled increasing dignity for women globally. The Christian understanding of intrinsic human value remains desperately needed today.Holladay, who, like Trible, teaches at the Andovr-Newton Theological School in Newton, Mass., said that all secondary sexism introduced by translators was being removed for the new edition of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible expected to be published in the mid-1980s. He opposed removing pronouns used for the Lord altogether because that results in excessive repetition of the word "God." Among other things, the Danvers Statement affirmed the submissive role of women. It said, “Wives should forsake resistance to their husbands’ authority and grow in willing, joyful submission to their husbands’ leadership.” The OT stories were cosmic myths and reflected the views of the constellations. They were written at a time when the goddess was being dissed. A correct reading of the original OT would also exclude the name of Eve who cosmically was Ishtar/Ashera. Adam had 2 wives, one in Eden, one afterwards. Only the man was expelled if you read the text. It was believed the perverse worship of the goddess caused two meteors to destroy two Babylonian cities, according to ancient texts. Ishum who pleaded with Irra not to destroy anymore cities became Abraham in the OT as did many Akkadian kings and gods. Noah’s wife didn’t have a name because there are no stars in Argo or Orion that represent women. Sarah is represented in Hercules, Rebecca in Cancer, Jacob’s wives in Auriga, Moses’ wife in the Pleiades (one of seven sisters, not hard to figure out), Bathsheba in Sagittarius and oddly she was also Ishtar. Tamar- Northern Crown etc.

My friend told me that it would all be fine if I read the Bible in the company of the Holy Spirit because then I would understand God’s loving intent. Imagine, he said, that your friend Jenny, in the course of a conversation, told you that you were foolish. If you didn’t know her well, if you couldn’t see the gleam in her eye, you might be hurt and offended. But if you knew she was kidding around, you wouldn’t be hurt, you’d enjoy the banter. It is easy in the world today to look at everything with the perspective of sexism, as society has ripped apart seemingly innocent literature to show examples of the discrimination against women.

6. Problems in Our Post-Christian Society

While it is true to say that there are two particular passages in Paul's writings which seem to go against all of this, by commanding some women to be silent and forbidding others from teaching, these must be read and interpreted in their specific context. Paul himself gives guidelines for women when they publicly prophesy and also affirms women who teach, like Priscilla. It would be "impossible and dishonest" to purge the Bible of all pro-male bias, she said, but one should "sweep diligently through Scripture to discover female imagery for God." Trible and Holladay cited Deuteronomy 32:18 as an example of female imagery that had been distored by sexism in translations, not in the original.
